Is this possible?
Hello, I have recently been on a pilgramige to Ladywell cemetry having researched some family history. We have a photograph of a little girl named Edith Jenner, she would have been my great great Auntie. I had allways wanted to find out what happened to her and found out that shortly after her photograph was taken she was killed during WW1. She had been living at her home in Hither Green when the last Zeppelin bomb to fall on London struck her family home. Her Mother, my Great Great Grandmother was very brave that night and held up a partician wall to rescue her children, unfortunately Edith couldn't be saved and my Great Great Grandmother collapsed. She was later awarded a medal for bravery and their story featured in many national newspapers. Following some internet research I was finally able to find Edith's last resting place. My Greatgrandmother remembered her sister well and used to speak of her funeral which took place at Ladywell Cemetry. She later in the 1970s visited Edith's grave and spoke of how lovely it was, tended well by a kind man with a light beside it. My Greatgrandmother died in the 1980s and following my internet research some members of my family and I decided to visit the grave. We knew that it would be hard to find but found out that her grave was one of two civillian graves for those who had died that night, one grave for the catholics and the other for the church of England civillians. Behind them is the WW1 civillian war memorial, described on the Lewisham War memorials as a large headstone listing each of their names, there was also a list of each name online. Coming all the way from Hastings we planned our trip carefully last month. When I arrived at the cemetry with my great uncle and other family members the heavens opened but we perservered in our quest to find this memorial. I had read that it is situated in heroes corner, Ladywell cemetry and found some workmen who helped me but to no avail, I rang the Hither Green Crematorium number as the kind men advised and a lady explained that she did know where it was but sadly the headstone was broken down and no names were left on it. She said that she had been asking for many years for something to be done but was told that nobody knew whose names were on it- this is not the case because the names are listed online. We managed to work out where the main graves are and also to work out the first line on the memorial/ headstone "In memory of those who were killed during enemy airaids of the first world war 1917/18". We were devastated to find the stone broken and laying flat down. It seems that it is situated just infront of a new wall for the soldiers who lost their lives- perhaps it was damaged during the building of this? According to further research it had been tended carefully. I ask if there is anything that can be done to preserve it to it's original state? and who I should contact? Although just a civillian memorial, it is still an important part of our history, I have also taken many photographs if any body is interested so that I can show the exact place. Thank- you Hayleyjuned
excellent points and the details are more specific than elsewhere, thanks.
